Foster Carriers was started by Dr. Lisa J. Madden. Lisa grew up in foster care (moving 12 times in less than 8 yrs) and knows first hand what it feels like to be a “garbage bag kid.” A high school dropout that struggled with learning disabilities, Lisa faced most of the educational and life challenges encountered by foster children. Fortunately, after getting her GED at 18, Lisa went on to college and eventually completed her Ph.D. in Neurobiology and Behavior at the University of Washington. Lisa worked as a researcher until she left science to start Foster Carriers and to work on a memoir about her life. She sees herself as a role model and hopes that through Foster Carriers she can give hope to foster kids facing similar challenges. If you would like to learn more about Lisa’s story, please read some of her memoir excerpts from: Visiting Hours: One girl’s story of tragedy and triumph after losing her mother to madness. |
