For Foster Youth |
|
Select all that apply: 1. I am alone in the world. 2. Nothing will ever get better. 3. No one gives a damn about me. 4. Life will always be terrible. 5. I can’t trust anyone. 6. I must be bad because no one wants me. 7. I’ll be dead before I’m 20. 8. I can’t count on anyone but myself. 9. I’m worthless. 10. I’d be better off dead.
How many did you select?
When I was in foster care, and for a long while after I left, I would have selected all of these questions. I felt awful about myself but never told anyone. I didn’t want them to know I was weak, so I suffered silently. Then I funny thing happened, I decided to reach out… to my ex social worker, to a counselor, to a teacher, to a doctor, to a friend, and this is what I found:
1. I am not alone in the world. 2. Things get better. 3. People seem to care about me. 4. My life is really wonderful. 5. I can trust people, maybe not everyone, but enough people to make my life safe. 6. I am not bad and good people want to be with me. 7. I have lived well beyond 20 and I want to live a long, long, time. 8. I can count on myself, but there are others I can count on too. 9. I’m am not worthless, I have a purpose and I am good. 10. Life is wonderful and I so happy to be alive.
I did not come to believe these things overnight, it took a some time and effort on my part. YOU can change your life and the negative feelings you have too. You just have to be open and willing to make the changes required to be happy. So from someone who has been there and knows what your going though... PLEASE DO NOT GIVE UP OR BE AFRAID TO ASK FOR HELP! YOUR LIFE WILL GET BETTER! DO NOT BE A VICTIM OF YOUR PAST!
